One of Tokyo’s most talked-about neighborhoods is Kuramae, which has long been known as a manufacturing district.
Tucked away in this quiet corner of Tokyo’s Shitamachi (“Lower Town”) is Nui., a hostel that attracts visitors from all over the world.
In this article we’re going to take a look at this hidden gem.

Nui.’s stylish design catches your eye as soon as you reach the entrance.
Originally the building was a toy warehouse, in operation since the Edo period. We’re told that the hostel staff refurbished the building themselves over a period of three and a half months, working with carpenters and other artisans from all over Japan.
Because the décor was made by staff members’ own hands, faithfully preserving the original structure, the hostel was named Nui., shortened from tenui meaning “hand-sewn “.
The warmth and attention to detail that went into the décor are probably one reason this location is so appealing to so many travelers.

Café & Bar Lounge

Inside the ground-floor entrance is the café and bar lounge. Special reports on the café have been featured in a wide range of media.
The coffee is lovingly prepared by a barista, using carefully selected beans renowned for their delicious flavor.
At night, the café transforms into a bar, which serves meals and about 100 types of cocktail, as well as beer and other alcoholic beverages. In addition to guests, locals visit the lounge by day and night for coffee, drinks and other refreshments.
The curves of the wood combine with the color scheme to furnish a relaxing environment.

A lively schedule of events draws Japanese visitors in considerable numbers. Live musical performances are offered once or twice a month, and various exhibitions are interspersed with workshops on crafts such as silk-screen printing and chalk art. (You can find a calendar of events on the Nui. website.)
If you’re looking for a place where local residents and visitors from elsewhere in Japan and around the world circulate and mingle, you’ve found it at Nui..
